Should you be using premium gas?
Is premium fuel better?
This is a question we receive all the time. Does using premium fuel really make a difference in the performance of my vehicle? Is it better overall? The answer is, not necessarily. It's important to use gasoline with the right octane for the right engine. If your vehicle specifically requires premium fuel, it's a good idea to use that or your vehicle won't perform at its best. Similarly, using high-octane gasoline on an engine that doesn't require it, offers no benefit and won't make your vehicle perform any better.
What is premium gas?
Essentially, any fuel that has an octane level of 91 or above is considered premium. Unleaded gasoline, or regular, has an octane level of 87. The octane rating measures the fuel's ability to minimize pinging or knocking inside the engine. Preventing pinging or knocking is important, especially in engines with a high compression ratio.
What happens if I don't use premium gas when it's required?
Not using the required fuel can spell big problems done the road. Because regular engine oil doesn't have the ability to minimize the knocking inside a high-combustion engine, damage can be done quickly. When the damage will start, you don't really know. What can eventually happen is the modern rock sensor inside the engine will be thrown off, won't protect your engine from knocking and can damage your engine in the long-run.
It's worth noting that engine damage is expensive. Very expensive. The last thing you want is for your vehicle's engine to have issues and have to submit your vehicle to complicated, costly repair. The best thing you can do to protect your vehicle's engine is with proper maintenance and by using the correct engine fuel. Do you have questions or would like to learn more?
